INTERNATIONAL FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME DAY


International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder ( FASD) Awareness Day is observed every September 9th.The first FASDay was celebrated on the nineth of September 1999 (9/9/99). 

This day was chosen so that the world will remember that during the nine months of pregnancy, a woman should abstain from alcohol.

Though anytime is a totally a good time to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

People all around the world create and gather for events to raise awareness on dangers of drinking during pregnancy and the families and individuals who struggle with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) all over the world.

CAUSE AND PREVENTION
FASD is caused when a woman drinks alcohol during pregnancy.Alcohol in the mother’s blood passes to the baby through the umbilical cord.

There is no safe time to drink neither is there a known safe amount of alcohol to be drank during pregnancy or when trying to get pregnant yet.

Alcohol can be harmful for a developing baby during pregnancy and even when a woman is not aware that she is pregnant.
All types of alcohol are harmful during pregnancy including all wines and beer.

To prevent a child from having an FASD, a woman should not drink alcohol while pregnant or trying to get pregnant. This is because a woman could get pregnant and not be aware she is pregnant for about 4 to 6 weeks.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
A person with an FASD might present with:
1. Abnormal facial features, such as a smooth ridge between the nose and upper lip (this ridge is called the philtrum).
2. Deformities of limbs, joints and fingers.
3. Difficulty with attention.
4. Difficulty in school (especially with math).
5. Difficulties in vision or hearing problems.
6. Difficulty in reasoning and problem soving.
7.Heart defects, kidneys problems, or bones.
8.Hyperactive behavior or jitteriness.
9. Intellectual disability or low IQ.
10. Learning disabilities.
11. Low body weight.
12. Poor memory.
3. Poor coordination/balance.
14. Poor judgment skills.
15. Poor social skills.
16. Speech and language delays.
17. Sleep and sucking problems as a baby.
Shorter-than-average height.
18. Small head circumference.

RISK FACTORS
The more intake of alcohol during pregnancy, the greater the chance of harming your baby.Women at risk of FASD are:
1. Pregnant women.
2. Women trying to get pregnant.
3. Women who think they might be pregnant.

TREATMENT
There is no certain cure for FASDs, but research has shown that early intervention treatment services can improve a child’s development.1. Medication
2. Parent therapy
3. Behavior and education therapy.

PREVENTION
1. Don't drink if you are trying to get pregnant.
2. Continue to avoid alcohol during your pregnancy.
3. Women with alcohol problem, should get help before you get pregnant.
